A recent survey shows that for data scientists, the many tasks they spend their time working on are very different from the tasks they actually want to prioritize. This disparity can feel wide, especially when coworkers or internal clients think you can do it all. The expectations for those who work with data and analytics can be as large as the potential impact that can be made in organizations.

Large datasets have made astounding breakthroughs in machine learning possible. But oftentimes data is personal or proprietary, and not meant to be shared, making privacy a critical concern of and barrier to centralized data collection and model training. With federated learning, it's possible to collaboratively train a model with data from multiple users without any raw data leaving their devices. If we can learn from data across many sources without needing to own or collect it, imagine what opportunities that opens! Billions of connected devices -- like phones, watches, vehicles, cameras, thermostats, solar panels, telescopes -- with sensors to capture data and computational power to participate in training, could collaborate to better understand our environment and ourselves.

Art is subjective and everyone has their own opinion about it. When I saw the expressionist painting Blue Poles, by Jackson Pollock, I was reminded of the famous quote by Rudyard Kipling, "It's clever, but is it Art?" Pollock's piece looks like paint messily spilled onto a drop sheet protecting the floor. The debate of what constitutes art has a long history that will probably never be settled, there is no definitive definition of art. Similarly, there is no broadly accepted objective definition for the quality of a piece of art, with the closest definition being from Orson Welles, "I don't know anything about art but I know what I like." Similarly, people recognize unfair bias when they see it, but it is quite difficult to create a single objective definition.

The players can cooperate to achieve an objective, and compete against other players with conflicting interests. Creating artificial intelligence agents that can learn to compete and cooperate as effectively as humans remains a thorny problem. A key challenge is enabling AI agents to anticipate future behaviors of other agents when they are all learning simultaneously. Because of the complexity of this problem, current approaches tend to be myopic; the agents can only guess the next few moves of their teammates or competitors, which leads to poor performance in the long run. Researchers from MIT, the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, and elsewhere have developed a new approach that gives AI agents a farsighted perspective.
